This year's Rodeo is hosted by YakDawgs and Ultimate Kayak Fishing. The main sponsor is King Cove Kayak Center who has generously donated the use of their facilities to host the Rodeo on the weekend of June 5-7, 2009. King Cove is located in historic Stonington, Connecticut, on picturesque Wequetequock Cove. According to local lore, Wequetequock is a Pequot Indian name meaning "Water of many Ducks". A big thank you to Kevin and Don of King Cove for the use of their facilities again this year as the central location for the Kayak Fishing Rodeo. The tournament is a 3-day event, beginning officially at 5:00 PM Friday and ending at noon Sunday, followed by a lunch and award ceremony at King Cove at 1:00 PM. The Kayak Fishing Rodeo is a tournament to promote the rapidly growing sport of kayak angling. We encourage beginners and experts alike to join in the fun, make new friends and compete for bragging rights for the next year. We believe that this tournament has something for every angler, introducing beginners to the world of kayak fishing and expanding the limits of experienced kayak fishermen. All age groups are welcome - participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at Check-In and complete a signed waiver. Anglers between 16 and 18 years of age do not need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian during tournament competion, however any participant under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times while on the water duing the tournament.
If you would like to fish the tournament but don't own a kayak, or have a kayak suitable for fishing, King Cove Kayak Center has rental kayaks available on a first come first served basis at a discounted rate for the tournament. Rental kayaks equipped with rod holders are in limited supply, but additional kayaks (not pre-rigged for fishing) are also available. All kayak rental reservations should be made early to be sure you get one on the day of the tournament.
The tournament fishing area is unrestricted and is open to any of the local waters (CT, RI, and NY), as long as you Check-In at King Cove after 5:00 PM Friday and return by 1:00 PM Sunday. All anglers must have (and use) proper safety equipment on the water during the tournament any angler fishing at night needs to carry the additional safety equipment listed under "Rules". We believe the ability to fish in different waters will encourage more anglers to participate, but don’t overlook the phenomenal fishing opportunities in the local waters in and around Stonington, CT. If you are new to the area, we are happy to suggest local hot spots and point you in a direction that will put you close to fish based on your kayaking ability. King Cove Kayak Center's location, allows access to CT, RI or NY waters with less than a 15-minute paddle from King Cove and the salt ponds in Rhode Island are just a 10 to 15 minute drive away.
